To Protect and To Serve
In February 1955, the Los Angeles Police Department, through the pages of the internally produced BEAT magazine, conducted a contest for a motto for the police academy. The conditions of the contest stated that: 'The motto should be one that in a few words would express some or all the ideals to which the Los Angeles police service is dedicated. It is possible that the winning motto might someday be adopted as the official motto of the Department.' The winning entry was the motto, 'To Protect and to Serve' submitted by Officer Joseph S. Dorobek.

Both officers fired their weapons in quick succession when the man “made moves towards them”, then provided first aid until St John Ambulance paramedics arrived, Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said.
“They were both wearing body-worn cameras. I’ve seen the vision,” Mr Dawson told 6PR radio.
“They were confronted with a very dangerous situation. They’ve acted courageously.”
Mr Dawson said the man was only a few metres away from the officers at the time of the shooting.
The man remains in a serious but stable condition following surgery at Royal Perth Hospital.
“The man, we hope, will recover. We wish him a full recovery,” Mr Dawson said.

Shane McDonald told reporters he heard a “bang, bang, bang” sound. Pantone color manager 2 3 4 cylinder.
“Just this rapid gunfire in succession,” he said.
“I looked over to my wife and I said ‘Well, I think that was a gun’.”
The Major Crime Division and the Internal Affairs Unit are investigating the shooting, as is standard practice.
Mr Dawson said he did not want to pre-empt the outcome of those investigations and would not give details of the man’s injuries.
In May, police shot dead a man after they responded to a stabbing attack at a South Hedland shopping centre that left several people in hospital.
In September last year, Joyce Clarke was allegedly armed with a knife when a constable shot her dead outside a Geraldton home. That officer is facing a murder charge.
Following that incident, Mr Dawson announced the rollout of body-worn cameras would be brought forward.
“I’ve seen the value of having body-worn cameras because you not only capture the digital image there and then, there’s the audio as well,” he said.
“The absolute evidential and accountability value of this is so important.”

WA Police Union president Harry Arnott said he and the senior vice-president attended the scene in Yanchep to ensure the health and welfare of the officers involved.
“Thankfully, due to their professionalism and training, our members were not injured and are coping well given what they have been through,” he said in a statement.
“This is yet another illustration of the unique and dangerous work police officers do every single day.
“We will continue to assist our members throughout the process as their welfare is our paramount concern.”
Mr Dawson said the officers were not injured and had been given 72 hours of post critical incident leave.
Premier Mark McGowan described the shooting as a “very, very traumatic event.”
“I understand the police officers did their best to try and get the individual to disarm and stop being aggressive. Unfortunately it ended up the way it did,” he told reporters.
“Our police officers do a difficult job in very difficult situations and circumstances.”
